Nina opened up the episode with the words "wow, wow, just - wow" as she was describing her attraction to Patrick and by the end of the hour I think we were all in agreement. There was unanimous wowing as the makers of Offspring outdid themselves with not one drool-worthy scene, not two, but THREE scenes designed to really piss off our partners.
Here they are in order of appearance, not necessarily in order of preference:

And you know what I'm talking about. Jaws had to be picked up off floors and computer keyboards wiped down as Twitter went into collective meltdown. But in a good way. Partners were shown the hand and kids were told to shush as Nina and Patrick desperately tried to solve their problems without sex. Which of course was incredibly sexy.
So to the Offspring Powers That Be let me just say thank you. For once Ten lived up to its tagline - it was good. Seriously. It's almost like they knew they were competing with a bunch of men running around a field in tiny shorts (in winter, what's that about?). Ratings be damned, Offspring FTW.
And now a confession. The reason I opened this recap with Patrick was mainly to annoy all the angry male Offspring haters who for some reason clicked on this article. You know who you are. You think the show is crap, you don't understand why women like it, and why can't Australian television channels just show something bloody decent? You know, like State of Origin. I get it, I do, except for the part where you don't like Offspring. That's just weird.
So back to Patrick and, I hate to say it, Eloise, because for a wee slip of a thing she was a big presence this week.
Once upon a time when TV shows wanted us to hate a character they just gave them dark roots Amanda Woodward-style or called them something like Mrs Mangel, now apparently they just make them gluten-free. Horrible non-wheat eating bitch, trying to take better care of her health, who does she think she is? (I loved the pregnant pause when she admitted she didn't have an intolerance).
And so for another confession: I went wheat-free, gluten-free earlier this year in an attempt to improve my health. I lasted a good couple of months but if there was a secret camera in my kitchen it would've caught me devouring my son's leftover sandwich crusts last night, followed by a beer (it's the diet of champions I'm sure). So it didn't work out but hey at least I tried. But I digress.
So, that Eloise chick, ugh. Inviting Patrick to a bar, who does she think she is? Texting him late at night, what an upstart cow (I'm a bit concerned that I'm only half joking right now.) But really, it all was a bit weird and the beauty of Nina's neuroses is that they do always come from a germ of relatable truth. Who wouldn't be worried, especially in the early stages of a relationship, especially when it isn't a particularly well-functioning one, and especially when you are expecting a baby together. And, let's face it, especially when your boyfriend is off-the-charts hot. Completely understandable, maybe not healthy, but definitely understandable.
I did quite like Billie's nickname for Nina: Neuroses Woman. Unfortunately it's a bit of a come down from last week's Greyskull heights and the special powers are nowhere near as good (trust me).
Billie also had the charming turn of phrase for pregnancy, something along the lines of "there's a Patrick man-sapling in your Nina lady garden". Aaaaaand I think I'll leave that one well alone, I never did have a green thumb.
Linguistic achievements aside, Billie was on fire with her new haircut, new letterhead and new headshot (and a very spiffy blazer it has to be said). Well, until she got the photos back that is, and they were fabulous in their awfulness. I love that we got the pay-off of seeing them after enduring the most awkward photo shoot ever (great music though). Pure gold, thank you for the laugh.
While I'm glad Billie was getting back on her feet - no tears this week, yay! - the career storyline that grabbed my attention was Zara's. She was welcomed back at work with open arms and a yummy looking cake that said "it's been shit without you" (which, to be honest, is what we all want deep down inside) - but there's nothing like spending your day with someone else's baby to make you feel bad about not spending it with yours. Not even Zumbo has a cake that can make up for that.
But who needs cake when you have Jimmy - what a stand-up guy! He offers to wake up Alfie so Zara can say goodbye (of course no one in their right mind would actually do that), he then hides the fact that she missed the first giggle and makes up for it by taking Alfie in to her work so she doesn't miss out. Everytime we see him he is doing something sweet and thoughtful for Zara all the while taking care of a teeny tiny baby. And that scene of him sleeping on bed with Alfie? Soooooooo adorable.
Of course his real achievement this week was to quickly agree to hand over the baby reigns to Zara. I get the feeling Jimmy actually likes being the stay-at-home dad, so kudos to him. Seriously, what a guy, even if he does have a daggy delight for the Big Prawn.
So we have Jimmy and Zara making big, mature, life-altering plans, Nina and Patrick tackling their problems head on in the most mature way they are capable of and then at the other end of the scale we have Darcy and Cherie who are running away from their problems by taking off for a round-the-country drive. Wtf?
